Glengarry Community Woodlands was awarded the Best Sustainable Energy Project Award at the 1st Falck Awards Dinner in November last year.
Glengarry Community Woodlands was set up in 2016 when the community purchased a 32 hectare woodland in Invergarry. Since then, the group has been working to bring the woodland into active management, using it for activities for the community, and planning for a social-enterprise to create jobs.
The money awarded by Falck was match funded by a smaller grant from the Great Glen Energy Co-operative (a Falck initiative) and enabled the group to buy a tractor and a saw bench which will enable the group to start processing firewood with the new machinery by the end of May 2019.
The company have had a very successful first 6 months of trading, with sales really picking up from October 2019. The tractor purchased has allowed the increase of firewood processing significantly to meet this demand.
To date, sales of firewood are somewhere around £2,500 which puts them well ahead of their original projection.
