It’s all go at Thornton Road Community Centre Association

Dennis White from the Thornton Road Community Centre Association (TRCCA) in Blackwood and Kirkmuirhill near our Auchrobert Wind Farm has been in touch with an update.

As we know from our Awards last year where they picked up the prize for Best Decarbonisation Project, TRCCA aim to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of the centre. So far they have had quotes for the installation of 30 PV solar panels, with inverter and storage battery system, and a 24/7 EV charging point in the centre’s driveway. They will be applying to Foundation Scotland for more funding in the next few weeks and hope the work will start in the summer.

Citizens Advice Outreach weekly sessions have been running since January under the auspices of CAB Scotland and are run by a fully trained CAB volunteer. They have proven very popular and mean that local residents can avoid travelling to Lanark for advice.

Ipad training sessions for older people have also been popular and very timely given the current situation when their new skills have helped many people keep in touch with friends and family.

Work on the building itself has also been underway with the lack of storage space tackled with the purchase of a new 10’ x 8’ container. A Board member, and member of the Men’s Shed, has fitted it with end to end shelving and it is currently home to supplies of new wood, donated by local firms to the Men’s Shed who are planning to build a wood store when the weather warms up.

In order to improve access between the Centre, the storage container and the Men’s Shed, one of the windows in the back room of the Centre has been converted into a doorway. The new access will also allow CAB clients to enter the building without having to go through the main hall when other activities are taking place there.

Well done to the volunteers who keep the centre going with their hard work and forward thinking. Jean Kyle, TRCCA’s secretary and treasurer was recently awarded a Provost’s Community Award in recognition of all her work for the centre and also setting up and running the Over 60s Club at the centre. Congratulations Jean!
